A letter from the executive office

This is the time of year when we need to start planning for the year to come. So what should smart enterprises be thinking about?
For this issue, we took a look at the enterprise landscape and identified some of the most important trends and developments you’ll need to have on your radar as we head into 2010.
Much of what the pundits are saying on the subject reminds me of how cartographers in the Middle Ages referred to territory lay beyond known borders: "here there be monsters". The truth is a lot less gloomy. Despite the unknowns, the best advice going into next year is to proceed with caution, with an emphasis on "proceed".
Naturally, much of the focus for next year will be on efficiency, resilience and managing risk, as organizations increase their ability to keep costs in check and react quickly to change. So how will smart organizations make this happen?
One way is by further enabling mobile and remote workforces, allowing anywhere, anytime connectivity to enterprise applications.
Other major trends for 2010 include hard cost savings and increased flexibility in the data centre through virtualization; reducing capital costs through cloud computing and managed services; and staying on track with compliance in the face of increased regulation.
The ability to enable mobile and remote workforces, allowing anywhere, anytime connectivity to enterprise applications, will continue to be critical to success.
Staying on track with compliance in the face of increased regulation is also on the list. You can learn more on all of these issues in our top 5 trends piece.
And finally, with the spectre of H1N1 and the threat of global pandemics looming large, preparing for disaster has to factor into all planning for 2010. To help you with this we have put together a readiness assessment for you to explore the infrastructure, policy and human resource considerations necessary to prepare your organization for this eventuality.
As always, we welcome your feedback on the tools and resources we offer you in Bell Business Insights and on any other aspect of our services.
