Standard definition TV is almost square, with a 4:3 aspect ratio. HDTV shows much more of the picture, with an aspect ratio of 16:9. It's more similar to the shape of a movie theatre screen.
What's the difference?
Shows that aren't in widescreen have to be reformatted to fit regular TVs. This either means they cut out part of the picture, or pan back and forth to show the whole scene.
Widescreen format lets you see the whole picture the way it was originally filmed.
